About us
Oh Kyung-taek, Owner
A word from the owner
Before I rode waves, I played bass on stage. Around the age of twenty I was the bassist of Silver Spoon, a rock band produced by the singer Kim Jong-seo, and the rhythm I learned then still lives in my surfing. Reading a wave is, in the end, a lot like counting a beat.
I started surfing in 1993. I took lessons and entered contests in Bali, Australia, Japan and the Philippines, and in Korea I placed second in the Shortboard Open at the Iho Tewoo Beach contest in Jeju. The biggest thing 30 years taught me was not technique but how to respect the sea.
After riding waves around the world, the place I settled in 2015 was Ingu Beach in Yangyang. Surfside is 10 seconds on foot from Ingu Beach , so everything you need for surfing is in one place: first-time lessons, 1:1 coaching, board and wetsuit rental, a guesthouse and BBQ. With its long, shallow, gentle waves, this beach is as good as it gets for standing on a board safely for the first time.
Lessons are taught by me, an ISA (International Surfing Association) certified coach who also holds a lifeguard certification. Before every lesson I check each participant's swimming experience and the day's sea conditions. The certificates are not for show; they are my promise to take you into the sea safely and bring you back out. When the lesson is over, laughing and talking with you at the BBQ is part of my job too. It would not be wrong to say I opened a surf shop because I love being around people.
Seeing the smile on someone's face after their first wave is my greatest joy as a coach. If this is your first time, feel free to ask anything before you book. Let's start your first wave in Yangyang, safely and with a smile.
